My local society never acknowleged my retirement in writing or correspondence, although I was asked to stand at a local meeting. I was not invited personally to this meeting but my wife was since she is a full time practicing dentist. Spouses were invited to this meeting so that was I was there.

Investigate all the aspects of your post work financial life and for a year pre retirement try and live to that level while still working. Know your daily costs. Take the Canadian Securities course to understand the implications when your financial adviser suggests something.

Investigate how you will keep busy and stimulated.

Financial stability

Reduce your membership in organizations slowly over 6 mos to year so that they transition woujld not be so dramatic as it was for me.

Develop hobbies and an exercise programme prior to retirement.

Have other interests besides dentistry.

Be very knowledgeable of your financial situation.

Start to reduce your hours gradually. I went from full time 7.00-5.30 daily to the same hours three days a week.

1) Owe no money to anyone. 2) Know what your monthly expenses are for housing, travel, entertainment etc. 3) determine if any of your children or aging parents are in need of or maybe in need of financial assistance for whatever reasons, divorce, health etc. 4) Have a good financial knowledge and not depend entirely on someone else to manage your money..if you do not know what a DRIP is you probably shouldn’t retire!!
